I bought this camera to replace a few older model digital cameras- a Canon about 6 yrs old, and a HP camera about 10 yrs old that stopped working along time ago. This is by far the best camera so far for the price It takes great pictures on the auto feature, which is what I plan to use exclusively. It also takes clear shots with movement- such as trains and white water. Shots are clear even with user movement. It compares well picture quality wise for movement as compared to my manual Nikon using 400 speed film. The battery lasted 9 days of our vacation without a booster charge. It is easy to learn how to use and set the date, time, etc. It is small and light-weight- fits in my pocket or purse easily. Make sure you buy a memory card with this camera, as that is not included. Amazon sells these too and reminds you to add it to the cart at time of adding it to your cart.

(Note: This review is by Lydia McGrew, not by Tim.) I bought this camera after a lot of shopping. (Full disclosure: I didn't actually purchase it through Amazon.) I am not particularly good at photography, and it is just what I need. It has enabled me to take really nice shots both inside and out. You do have to get the owner's manual and read a little bit, but it's not a steep learning curve. I have found it quite easy, and I'm so far *extremely* pleased with the results. It takes pictures quickly enough for me, and even one or two that it said were going to be blurry were quite nice. I find that indoor pictures with lower light are more likely to blur if you use the zoom function. The orange hand-shake symbol will warn you, and you can try zooming back out. It usually does not give the hand-shake warning unless I try to use zoom, even under indoor lighting conditions. The files are rather large, so not convenient for sending by e-mail. Perhaps I could change the file size by altering the default pixel settings, but they look so nice that I don't want to mess with anything. I'm getting better shots with this than with our fancier Canon with more settings, because I can understand this camera. After approx. a week of use, I highly recommend it. Don't forget--you do need to buy a separate memory card.

Quick update: 12/24/14 - The price has dropped to the lowest I've seen since the product launch (200 USD).

Here's the deal. I'm not going to waste [too much] of your time spitting the specs back to you in a review. You have already looked at them. If you are here, it is because you don't want to spend 3000 USD on a high-end professional box and thousands more on lenses; but, you want something better than a basic point-in-shoot. Yes? If so, please continue.

Although there is NOTHING wrong with Nikon, I prefer Canon and have a 5D Mark III at work at a pair of XF 300's for video. They are amazing. No doubt. That said, the cost is overkill for personal/amateur use. Take the plunge in the Canon Family. The feel of this model is similar to the T2i/T3i. It has enough features to learn and grow with and not break the bank or cause you to purchase additional gear.
